The holiday season is definitely one that most look forward to, especially because of the awesome sales from America’s favorite stores. Though this is true, based on past experiences and instances, shopping during the holiday season can get a little crazy. From the crowded stores, overflowing lines, and reckless shoppers, it can be very stressful, and sometimes even alarming, trying to get your shopping done. Here are some holiday shopping tips and strategies for staying safe.
Late Night Shopping
Though there are a lot of stores that open on Thanksgiving day, it’s been apparent how empty scores get overnight. Lots of people storm in late Thursday night but leave around 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. This is one of the best times to sneak in! Some stores may be restocking, but there will be more people leaving the mall during this time. It will be less crowded, less overwhelming, and can make for an awesome and unique experience (just make sure to drink lots of coffee!) With this, it is extra important to stay safe, and minimize your risks of becoming a holiday shopping crime target.
That being said, this time of year can bring out a lot of crime. The overwhelming crowds and craziness can lead to attempted shoplifting and attempted crime against distracted people. Here are some basic tips to keep from becoming a holiday crime victim.
- do not shop alone, especially if you are planning on shopping at night.
- dress casually and comfortably.
- try not to bring a big bag, purse, or wallet. Keep things simple and attached to you at all times.
- leave the expensive jewelry at home.
- stay alert on your surroundings and the things that are happening around you, especially when you are feeling rushed, stressed, or overwhelmed.
- avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and pay with credit or debit card when possible.
- stay aware of strangers and how they are approaching you.
Making a list before you go shopping can be a great way to keep your priorities straight through the chaos. If you think about all the people you are shopping for, along with a few gift ideas for those specific people, you can go into the shopping extravaganza knowing exactly what you are looking for. This will make shopping a lot easier and keep you from stressing out too much!
Online Shop (Cyber Monday)
There are plenty of ways to get the deals you want without having to leave your family on Thanksgiving, get up at 6:00 am on Friday, or having to deal with the crowds and the lines. Although Monday is dedicated to online deals, many stores are extending their online sales and discounts for the entire weekend. Take a look at the stores you had in mind, and see if they are having online sales. You can avoid the crowds, and still get what you were looking for!
