Memorial Day is the symbol of the official opening of summer. Remembering and honoring our fallen warriors seems like an appropriate way to kick off the season in which, perhaps more than any other, we reap the great gifts of freedom (vacations, picnics, parades, family gatherings etc.) that the ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers and sailors and fliers have made possible.
Of course, one of the most time-honored traditions in our region is the annual Rochester Memorial Day Parade. This year’s event will take place, rain or shine, on the Monday that is set aside for the national holiday, Monday, May 28, 2018. It will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The route begins at East and Alexander Streets, runs to Main Street, and continues to Plymouth Avenue. Parking is available in these city-operated garages for $7: the East End Garage at 475 East Main Street; Court Street Garage, 194 Court St.; Sister Cities Garage, 28 N. Fitzhugh St.; South Avenue Garage, 39 Stone St.; and Washington Square Garage, 111 Woodbury Blvd.
The Memorial Day Parade is a great way to enjoy some time with family and friends, teach the young ones a little bit about the history of our nation and how others have bravely served, while also reflecting on our own lives in this nation of such abundance. Afterward, you may want to spend some outdoor time in our beautiful town. Of course, Penfield’s own Channing H. Philbrick Park (formerly Linear Park) is a fantastic choice to enjoy nature. Other ideas include an Erie Canal Boat Tour if you want to keep the historical theme of the day rolling (or rowing!), the Thomas Creek Wetlands Walk in Fairport or visiting the 40 acres of beauty in the Webster Arboretum at Kent Park.
No matter how you choose to spend your Memorial Day in the Greater Rochester area, always keep in mind that the people and things that we cherish so dearly, our loved ones, our homes, our together time, our alone time, has been defended and protected by others with their very lives. We owe it to them to never take these precious treasures for granted. Are you ready to cherish a new home? Contact me today to get started!
